Finally! Sunshine in Sydney! Perhaps our weather luck is finally changing! One good thing that came from all our running around the first day in Sydney was that we were able to quickly return to the Pylon Tower on the Harbor Bridge. After a “short” 200 steps up, we got a fantastic view of the Opera House and the Sydney CBD. Amazing how great the Opera House looks on a sunny day, huh?
Back on track to Manly Beach, we catch a 30 minute ferry ride. Like Devonport (in New Zealand), Manly is takes us to a completely different atmosphere from Sydney. A quaint harbor town, it’s mostly known for its waves and surfing. Watching the surfers catch the waves (and wipe out) easily passed 2-3 hours.
4 Pines Brewery was another must. So as we searched for it (walking past it for a good 15 minutes)… we spotted a fin flopping around in the surf of another harbor!
After a few minutes of contemplation of whether it was a sting ray or a shark and whether we should go closer, a local woman walking her dog must have overheard our conversation and decided to pipe in (and save us from embarrassment) and told us it was nothing more than a rubber mat from one of the boats. Oh well… At least we found 4 Pines and had a good laugh over our tasting.
After a yummy bite to eat at In Situ (the risotto was amazing), we braved the cold windy weather of the ferry ride back by sitting at the front of the boat, in hopes to get night shots of the bridge and Opera House (we may have gone overboard in taking pictures of these two attractions).
Our luck relapsed back into rainy weather our last day in Sydney. We visited Australia’s version of Hyde Park, Chinatown and then caught the bus to Bondi Beach. Bondi is completely a “beach” town. With a few dedicated surfers out in the water, we spent some time on the beach and then went on the Cliff Walk. It was a great view and we even managed to catch the ends of a rainbow when a bit of sun broke through the clouds!
Good-bye Sydney, and now off to Alice Springs… and the Outback!
