After a taste of Australia via Melbourne, we’re off to Auckland, New Zealand. Now, our “friendly” neighbor on the plane to Melbourne was from Auckland so of course, any suggestions were more than welcomed. All he said was “ha… g’luck… all you’ll get to see is rain.” Again, he was just so friendly But despite his prediction, we got beautiful, sunny weather!
First stop, Minus 5° Lounge – an underground lounge completely made out of ice. It was a little colder than -5C (rather it was -6.6) when we went in. It was very cool (no pun intended)! Surrounded by ice sculptures, we hung out at the bar, made out of ice, sipping our frosty beverages out of a glass… also made out of ice. The bar tender entertained us with stories and showed us sculptures he had helped make. Now what to have for dinner? The bar tender told us about a place that had “authentic Mexican” food and salsa dancing on a Thursday night. Authentic in New Zealand? We’ll let the Texans be the judge of that, thank you very much. It wasn’t Trudy’s but it pacified the Mexican craving for at least another week.
Devonport is a quaint little town a 10 minute ferry ride off the shore of Auckland… The people are so incredibly nice (The second you step foot near a crosswalk, all the cars crossing stop!) and also ready to help you find your next “Devonport must see.” We hiked up Mt. Victoria… well Piyusha huffed and puffed up the hill (if you see the picture it was a HUGE hill!!) The hike was worth it… the view was absolutely gorgeous.
Back on the ferry… quick stop at the hotel to grab our luggage… off to the airport to Wellington we go!
